Heikki Kovalainen set the fastest time of the morning session in Monaco, although the session was disrupted by rain which made later efforts relatively meaningless. Heikki's session ended when he lost the rear of his car and tagged a barrier, bringing out a red flag.

The word in the F1 paddock in Monte Carlo is that Fernando Alonso has just inked a deal to drive for Ferrari in 2010.

The Formula 1 manufacturers and the FIA agreed a few months ago to freeze Formula 1 engines until 2013. At Monaco there was an FIA poposal to move the goalposts and reduce the freeze until 2011.

As the FIA heads towards the General Assembly on June 3, the activity is ramping up in club circles as they try to decide whether to allow Max Mosley to stay on in his current role.

Bernie Ecclestone has written to the presidents of the FIA national clubs, replying to Max Mosley's recent letter. Ecclestone said that Mosley's statements "could lead to misunderstandings and inaccurate conclusions being drawn".

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time on Thursday afternoon in Monaco, four-tenths of a second ahead of the surprising Nico Rosberg in his Williams-Toyota, who was a few hundredths ahead of the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

Monaco marks Sir Frank Williams's 600th World Championship Grand Prix as an entrant, his first race having been the 1969 Spanish Grand Prix when he entered Piers Courage in a Brabham BT26. In the course of his career Frank's cars have won 113 races, seven Drivers' titles and nine Constructors' titles.

The word in the paddock in Monaco is that Renault's second driver Nelson Piquet Jr is under pressure from the team to improve his performance or may find himself replaced within the next few races.

Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheets in the first session of practice for the Monaco GP with a gap of two-tenths of a second ahead of Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen. Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari was fourth fastest with Nico Rosberg being the best of the rest in his Williams-Toyota, ahead of BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica and Renault's Fernando Alonso.

Bernie Ecclestone has told The Times newspaper that he and CVC will respond to the recent letter from Max Mosley to the FIA club presidents - with a letter of his own.

Teams do not like to introduce new cars at Monaco. The nature of the circuit means that there are accidents and that cars need to be repaired and it is easier to fix cars that one knows than new ones. The fact is that Toro Rosso needs results and so it is taking a risk and hoping that things will work out. It is either very brave or simply mad.

A fire has destroyed the French country home of Mika Hakkinen. The blaze broke out in the mansion outside the village of Callian, near the town of Grasse, in Provence.

The FIA has now published the contents of Max Mosley's letter to the FIA club presidents.
