Johnnie Walker has announced that it is extending its sponsorship of McLaren until 2012 in an announcement that has clearly been timed to send a message to the F1 world that the company is standing squarely behind the team.

Alexander Wurz is to retire as a race driver at the end of the season. He is expected to remain at Williams s a test driver next year. The news is yet to be officially announced.

Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix with an impressive lap that was a tenth of a second faster than the best that Kimi Raikkonen could manage. The big question was that of fuel loads because the Ferrari had been ahead throughout practice on Friday and Saturday.

In the overall scheme of things, the recent spats in Formula 1 are not that important when it comes to the sports pages. The news that Lewis Hamilton would not be punished over the Safety Car in Japan was a good decision as it put a cap on allegations bubbling away about possible manipulation of the World Championship.

Kimi Raikkonen continued to lead the way in the practice for the Chinese GP with a lap that was a tenth faster than Fernando Alonso's McLaren. The Spanish driver was a tenth behind him but two-tenths up on Felipe Massa.

Kimi Raikkonen continued to lead the way in Friday's practice for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai with a best lap that was just six-thousandths of a second faster than Fernando Alonso's McLaren-Mercedes.
